Anyone who submitted to this round of the DFA’s will also receive a free subscription to re-watch the recording of the broadcast.

How does the judging work?

During our Live-stream Broadcast, you will have a chance to view the finalist selections of the preliminary-round judges as our live judging panel curates a final gallery of award-winning photographs.

This final round of judging is a transparent, three-day process that is constructive and engaging, aimed at helping photographers grow in their craft.  As the judges narrow down the photos in each category, they will discuss what makes a great documentary photograph or series and the reasoning behind their final selection of award winners and honorable mentions.

Our Fall 2021 judging panel is made up of photojournalist, lecturer and co-founder of the Iris Photo Collective, Carl Juste, documentary photographer and educator Jenna Shouldice, and photographer, educator and speaker Kirsten Lewis. You can read more about their expertise in their judging bios.

We hope you join us as we review the inspiring work of your fellow photographers and watch the announcements of the latest DFA winners!
